'Beach' by Daren Catlin, Colour Printer of the year 2006
Fujifilm has unveiled the winners of the PPLA Colour Printer Awards 2006, click here to view winning images.
This year, entries were judged from two categories; ‘Landscapes and Buildings’ and ‘People and Occasions’.
The overall winner was Daren Catlin of Bayeux Ltd in London, with the image shown here. As overall winner, Daren receives £700 in addition to his £300 1st place prize for the ‘People and Occasions’ category. Bayeux Ltd of Newman Street, London also receive a comprehensive marketing package worth £3,000, including professional consultancy in public relations, advertising, direct marketing and design.
2nd prize in ‘People and Occasions’ was awarded to Vahakn Vorperian of Touch Digital Ltd in London. Vahakn receives a £200 award for his ‘Fisherman’ image. Runner up was Jay Winter of Metro Imaging in London for his ‘Craig Vines Comic’ print.
Simon Douglas, of Metro Imaging in London, topped the ‘Landscapes and Buildings’ category, scooping the £300 first prize with his ‘Temple Interior’ print.
Second place in the category, and the £200 prize, went to John McCarthy of Outback Printworks Ltd in London, with his print, entitled ‘Late Evening in Provence’. Runner up was Mick Payne of Photo Nottingham, with the image ‘Marrakech Market’.
The standard of prints was described by the judges as being ‘very high’ and the judging panel included Nigel McNaught of PMA, Alf Coombes of Manchester Colour Lab Ltd, Ken Sethi of Genesis Laboratory Ltd, Bhupat Jedav of K&S Commercial Photos Ltd and Paul Austin of Fujifilm. During the judging and selection process, comparisons were made between the machine print and the finished colour print to determine the skill and amount of work put into producing the final piece. Particular attention was paid to the sharpness of the print, the overall colour balance, dodging and shading skills, the use of creative printing techniques and composition.
All of the images entered in the Colour Printer Awards 2006 will be displayed during the PPLA/PSPA conference on Wednesday 12th July 2006 at the Hilton Hotel in Coventry.
